Regina Resnik était une soprano américaine, dont la tessiture couvrait 3 octaves et dont la carrière, qui s’est étalée sur cinq décennies, fut commencée comme soprano dramatique pour finir comme mezzo.

Regina Resnik est née le 30 août 1922 dans le Bronx, à New-York. Elle est issue d’une famille de Juifs ukrainiens qui avaient émmigrés aux États-Unis pour échapper aux pogroms tsaristes. Ses parents s’établirent dans le Bronx, qui était à l’époque un quartier très pauvre. Dès son plus jeune âge, Regina sut qu’elle voulait être chanteuse d’opéra. Bien que ses parents n’aient pas les moyens de lui payer des cours de chant, elle commença, à 13 ans, une formation avec Rosalie Miller, qui lui donna gratuitement des cours. Resnik poursuivit ses études avec Miller pendant ses années universitaires jusqu’au début de sa carrière professionnelle. Regina était aussi précoce et disciplinée dans ses études universitaires que pour la musique. Après avoir sauté plusieurs années, elle apprit l’allemand et l’italien au lycée. Elle refusa une bourse à la Juilliard School of Music pour aller au Hunter College de New-York. Là, elle put obtenir un diplôme en éducation musicale qui pouvait lui permettre d’enseigner si elle ne pouvait pas vivre du métier de chanteuse. Cela ne fut pas nécessaire.

Au début des années 40, sa carrière de chanteuse franchit plusieurs étapes décisives. Elle fit ses débuts en concert à la Brooklyn Academy of Music le 27 octobre 1942. La même année, elle fit ses débuts à l’opéra, dans le rôle de Lady Macbeth (Macbeth) au sein de la nouvelle compagnie d’opéra de Fritz Busch au Broadway Theatre de Manhattan. Elle entama également une tournée nationale aux États-Unis sous les auspices du Pryor Concert Management de Council Bluffs situé dans l’Iowa, donnant quarante concerts avec des sociétés chorales, dans des villes universitaires, dans des clubs de femmes et des églises. Elle fit ensuite ses débuts internationaux en 1943 en chantant Leonore (Fidelio) à Mexico et Micaëla (Carmen) dans la première saison du New-York City Opera avec Dusolina Giannini dans le rôle-titre.

L’année suivante, elle fut admise sur audition au Metropolitan Opera en interprétant l’air Ernani, involami. Elle y fit ses débuts le 6 décembre 1944, en remplacement de dernière minute de Zinka Milanov pour chanter Leonora de Il Trovatore de Verdi; elle avait été prévenue la veille! Le succès fut au rendez-vous, et les critiques notèrent: «que toute sa virtuosité vocale et sa présence sur scène comme actrice était très impressionnante».  Parmi les autres rôles principaux que Resnik endossa lors de sa première saison au Met, citons les rôles-titre de Tosca, Santuzza (Cavalleria rusticana) et Leonore (Fidelio). Au cours de la décennie suivante, elle incarna une vingtaine d’héroïnes dont Donna Elvira et Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Leonore (Fidelio), Sieglinde (Die Walküre), Gutrune (Götterdämmerung), Chrysothemis (Elektra), Rosalinda et Eboli (Don Carlos), Aida, Alice Ford (Falstaff), Tosca, Madama Butterfly et Musetta (La bohème). Elle fut la première Ellen Orford du Met dans Peter Grimes et a créé Dalilah lors de la première mondiale de The Warrior de Bernard Rogers. Resnik devint une soprano de premier plan au Met où elle s’est produite de 1944 à 1983. Elle a aussi contracté une longue association avec l’Opéra de San Francisco.

En dehors du Met, elle chanté dans des œuvres de compositeurs modernes comme Poulenc (un portrait inoubliable de la vieille prieure dans Dialogues des carmélites), Menotti (The Medium), Gottfried von Einem (La visite de la vieille dame), Walton (The Bear), Weill (Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny), Britten (The Rape of Lucretia) et Barber pour la création mondiale de Vanessa. 

Durant cette période, elle travailla avec de nombreux chefs d’orchestre légendaires, dont Edward Johnson, Jean Morel, Sir Thomas Beecham, Otto Klemperer, George Szell, Fritz Reiner, William Steinberg, Erich Leinsdorf et Bruno Walter. De plus, elle appris beaucoup sur le chant et tout ce qui concerne la musique avec son manager, William Stein, et avec son accompagnateur, Leo Taubman.

En 1983, elle chanta Sieglinde (Die Walküre) au festival de Bayreuth sous la direction de Clemens Krauss. Ce dernier lui fit prendre conscience que sa voix commençait à s’assombrir alors qu’elle chantait jusque là des rôles de soprano dramatique. Il lui conseilla donc de s’orienter vers des emplois de mezzo-soprano. En 1955, elle entama de nouvelles études avec le célèbre baryton Giuseppe Danise. Sous sa direction, elle a abandonné son large répertoire de rôles de soprano et a appris de nouvelles parties de mezzo qui ont fait ressortir la couleur vocale chaleureuse pour laquelle elle est devenue célèbre. Après un an de travail, elle revint sur scène le 15 février 1956, pour débuter comme mezzo-soprano au Metropolitan, dans une brillante interprétation de Marina (Boris Godunov) dirigée par Dimitri Mitropoulos. Elle enchainera ensuite avec un grand nombre de rôle de mezzo comme: Clytemnestre (Elektra), Miss Quickly (Falstaff), la Comtesse (La Dame de pique), Eboli (Don Carlos), Carmen (Carmen), Azucena (Le Trouvère) et Herodias (Salomé).

Ce changement d’orientation vocale déplut à Rudolf Bing, l’ombrageux directeur du Met, provoquant entre eux une longue désaffection, ce dernier ne lui offrant plus que des rôles mineurs.  Ce manque de reconnaissance l’a incitée à partir pour l’étranger afin de chanter les rôles qu’elle souhaitait. Le résultat fut une carrière très réussie en Europe. Elle obtint un succès particulier au Covent Garden de Londres, où elle fit ses débuts dans le rôle-titre de Carmen en 1957, sous la direction de David Webster. Ses autres rôles à Londres comprenaient Marina (Boris Godunov), Miss Quickly (Falstaff) et Klytamnestra (Salomé). Elle chanta Carmen à Vienne sous la direction de Herbert von Karajan en 1957 et 1958, suivie de représentations à Berlin, Paris et Stuttgart. Parmi les autres rôles couronnés de succès en Europe, mentionnons Amneris (Aida), Fricka (Das Rheingold et Die Walküre) et Herodius (Salomé). Malgré des représentations occasionnelles avec le Metropolitan Opera, Resnik finit par démissionner pour protester contre le fait qu’elle n’avait pas été choisie pour chanter Carmen dans la production de l’Opéra du Met de 1987. Elle y revint plus tard lorsque la direction du Met fit marche arrière et lui proposa enfin le rôle.

Elle épousa en 1947 l’avocat Harry W. Davies, avec qui elle eut plus tard un fils. Elle s’est remariée en 1975 avec le peintre Arbit Blatas.

En plus de son activité de chanteuse, chanter, Resnik travailla comme metteur en scène dans plusieurs Opéras européens, dans les années 1970 et 1980, généralement en collaboration avec son mari, scénographe et costumier Arbit Blatas.  Elle a réalisé un total de douze productions.

 Elle fut aussi très active comme professeur de chant, enseignant dans plusieurs conservatoires de musique, comme la Juilliard School, l’école du Metropolitan Opera pendant dix ans, le Mozarteum de Salzbourg, la Canadian Opera Company à Toronto, l’Opéra de San Francisco, l’Opera Studio de l’Opéra Bastille à Paris, le Curtis Institute of Music et dans diverses villes d’Italie. Sa méthode d’enseignement était merveilleusement empirique: elle n’imposait pas son propre modèle aux étudiants, mais, après avoir examiné les caractéristiques vocales de chacun, elle en tirait patiemment le meilleur parti.

Les célébrations de sa carrière ont commencé à New-York lorsque le Regina Resnik Day a été proclamé. Elle a reçu le Lawrence Tibbett Award de l’American Guild of Musical Artists et un hommage spécial du Lincoln Center. La ville de Venise célébra son 50ème anniversaire lors d’un événement spécial. Le 60ème anniversaire de sa carrière fut célébré par la Metropolitan Opera Guild au Lincoln Center de New-York. Le Hunter College lui a décerné un doctorat honorifique en lettres humaines et, en 2007, le New England Conservatory la gratifia d’un un doctorat en musique. Elle a été administratrice de la Hunter Foundation et membre du jury des Peabody Awards for Radio and Television. Elle a également été membre du conseil d’administration de la Metropolitan Opera Guild et du conseil consultatif de CUNY TV. Elle a été nommée commandante de l’Académie française des arts, des sciences et des lettres, Kammersängerin en Autriche et a reçu la médaille du président aux États-Unis.

Regina Resnik est décédée le 8 août 2013, à l’âge de 90 ans, d’un accident vasculaire cérébral à Manhattan. 

Regina resnik laisse le souvenir d’une phénoménale bête de scène qui, partie des emplois de soprano aigus et vocalisants, termina sa carrière dans ceux de contralto, le tout avec un égal succès. Elle n’attendit pas comme d’autres divas de perdre ses aigus pour devenir mezzo. L’irascible Bing lui en voulut de contrarier ses plans, comme il reprocha, dans le même temps, à Maria Callas de les refuser pour des raisons lointainement similaires. Une similitude troublante, à l’énoncé des rôles abordés (très tôt et conjointement) par ces deux chanteuses, nées à un an d’intervalle et dotées de la même étendue potentielle de trois octaves. Mais là où Callas s’efforça de résoudre, dans ses meilleures années, son problème d’identité vocale, en pliant sa versatilité à un type d’émission néo-belcantiste ou romantique, Resnik se laissa guider pendant longtemps par son seul tempérament qui, joint à de considérables moyens, lui permit d’affronter crânement les écritures et les profils de soprano les plus disparates, au plan de la couleur comme à celui du style.

Tout au long de sa carrière, les critiques ont félicité Resnik pour son superbe jeu d’acteur. Elle s’est efforcée d’ajouter de nouvelles dimensions à chaque rôle et de créer une force dramatique et une subtilité. On est surpris de la facilité avec laquelle elle interprétait des personnages totalement opposés avec une adéquation parfaite, par exemple la princesse Eboli et Mrs Quickly, ou Klytämnestra (Elektra) et le prince Orlofsky (La Chauve-Souris), etc. Ce n’était pas seulement une question de voix, qu’elle avait évidemment belle, ou de technique qui n’avait pour elle aucun secret : c’était une grande actrice capable de s’emparer de tous les personnages qu’elle incarnait, en mettant également en valeur différents aspects de son caractère. Ses interprétations sont des chefs-d’oeuvre d’analyse, et, pour la diction et les nuances psychologiques, très modernes.
